The culture of Bangladesh screams togetherness. In my project, I wanted to go back into the history of the nation and the key components of it's culture (language, behavior, belief, and values). Why is the nation they way it is? That is the question I wanted to ask myself. The thinking skill for this project is contextualization. For my project, I looked into the context of the young country and what has influenced the culture as it stands.
history
It is interesting to think that at one point in time, not too long ago, Bangladesh was not considered it's own country. It used to be considered East Pakistan, but that was until the Bangladesh Liberation War. After the victory from the Bangladeshi's, the culture of the nation took a shift. I analyzed it's culture and questioned why it may be the way it is. During the process, I was told of the four main components to culture. Those being: language, belief, behavior, and value. I looked into the context between each of these components and how they may have developed over time.
I learned quickly about Bangladesh's Eskushey Februari (Mother Language Day - February 21). I also learned about the respect and value the nation holds over it's art. Authors and poets are respected highly in Bangladesh. The country is populated with mostly Muslims yet there is still a decent amount of Hindu's and Christian's thrown into the mix as well.
To collect all my ideas and thoughts together -- I made a mind map!

The country of Bangladesh holds a spot in it's heart for the Bangladeshi literary kings and queens. The Bangladeshi people worship the works of literary art that are from the soil of their motherland. For my english portion, I gathered some of the best poems from some of the best poets in Bangladesh history. Not only did I analyze these classic poems, I also used green ink to form blackout poetry. I changed the meaning, altering the poem almost completely. I decided to do blackout poetry to show how easily the context can change by simply removing phrases. The examples of my blackout poetry will be listed below, with the original poem underneath it.
Changing the words completely removed the context of the poem. Many of these poems were of love and appreciation, so it would seem to be very hard to turn that meaning into something more low and vulnerable. And it was indeed very challenging. It took many tries to configure the pre-existing poems to become what I wanted, but it was definitely worth it.
poets I used:
JIBANANANDA DAS
RABINDRANATH TAGORE
AMIYA CHAKRAVARTY

art
Bangladesh's culture is unmatched. For my art portion, I recreated the Bangladesh flag to symbolize the country. In Bangla, the word for culture is shonskreti. I decided to use my lips to form lip prints that blended together. I wrote out the word with my lip prints, and utilized a tool in Mr. Grandi's room to cut out 'shonskreti' from the piece of chipboard. That portion really vocalized the language aspect of culture. To capture the essence of faith and belief into my flag, I used a hijab to form the circular red shape that is found on the nation's flag. For the behavioral aspect, I took the blackout poetry and added it to the background to form the green basis to replicate the nation's flag. The cultural values were shown through the use of the nation's most beloved poet's and their creations.
